Harry Coffey hopes his trip to town will provide he and his father Austy a rare city success.

The father-and-son team team with Messignadi in the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m) and Miss Cheviots in the Next Generation Sprinters Series Final (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Based at Swan Hill, the Coffey's are infrequent visitors to metropolitan tracks but headed to Sandown last month to claim victory with Messignadi, who is undefeated in two starts.

Messignadi steps to 1600m on Saturday at her third start and Coffey Jr thinks she will handle it.

In the back of his mind though is she might be coming to the end of her preparation.

Coffey has ridden the filly in both starts and has ridden her in trackwork since her Sandown victory.

"She hasn't gone backwards, but she's not a brilliant worker at home," Coffey said.

"But she worked very similar on Tuesday to what she did before she came down to win at Sandown.

"We think the mile will suit but it is a little unknown with a two-year-old coming to the end of its prep.

"She has flown under the radar a bit, especially as she is not a good trackworker, but she's a filly that goes to the races and really puts in.

"I think she's got more heart and determination than anything and that's probably what's got her over the line at the first two starts."

Miss Cheviots has only raced once and came from last to finish third in a small maiden field on her home track on June 12.

Coffey said she was a nice filly but may not be ready for a strong 1200m at Flemington at this stage.

"We're hoping for her to be a float mate and if she could run third, and she has the ability to do that, that would be great," Coffey said.
