Team Godolphin and trainer James Cummings will be hoping Viridine can avenge last year's defeat in a late season stakes race at Caulfield

The evergreen sprinter is likely to be Godolphin's sole representative in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) on Saturday.

A rising seven-year-old and a stalwart of the sprinting ranks of Godolphin, Viridine finished a three-quarter length second to Jungle Edge in the sprint 12 months ago.

Viridine then came out two weeks later to claim the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

The son of Poet's Voice is following a similar program towards the Monash Stakes as he did 12 months ago.

After competing in Adelaide in which he finished fourth in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) and sixth in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), Viridine returned to NSW to run third in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on June 12.

Last year, after running fourth in the McKay Stakes, Viridine returned to NSW to run fourth in the June Stakes before winning the Winter Dash (1200m) two week later.

Sean Keogh, the Godolphin representative in Melbourne, is expecting Viridine to run in the Sir John Monash Stakes.

"Apparently at the moment Viridine will be the one," Keogh said.

"He's up at Osborne Park at the moment being trained.

"It's a possibility that he'll be the one and if they decide to run, he'll come down later in the week."

A total of 18 horses have been nominated for the weight-for-age sprint.

Notable nominations include Order Of Command, Red Can Man and William Thomas.
