Owner buys a top brew

3 minute read

When racehorse owner Stephen Pregnell purchased a weanling at the William Inglis sale about three years ago, he had high hopes that he had bought himself a future champion, after all that’s what every owner hopes for when they head to the sale ring.

In Brief

  • Brew Horse delivers on promise.
  • Owner thrilled to realise dream.
  • Trainer to give gelding time to mature.

In Hobart last Sunday the $2,000 bargain buy delivered the goods at his sixth career start by winning a Tasbred Bonus maiden over 1390 metres, much to the delight of the horse's owner.

As soon as he had purchased the then colt, he called trainer Stephen Shaw and they set about turning the gelded son of Fiorente into a racehorse.

"It's been a long time in the making but we've done it and we all have a pocketful of cash," Shaw said.

"When Stephen (Pregnell) bought this horse, he rang me and said he had a lovely horse that might develop into a handy galloper.

"The colt was only a weanling, but he had a terrific conformation, but we realised early in that he was immature and would need time to develop."

Jockey Mehmet Ulucinar had Brew Horse ideally placed in fourth spot one-off the rails and camped behind the leaders.

The heavily backed The Beekeeper forged to the lead at the top of the straight but when Ulucinar eased his charge three-wide to challenge, Brew Horse quickly put the result beyond doubt and went on to score by almost two lengths from the fast-finishing The Executive with The Beekeeper hanging on for third.

Shaw and Pregnell have high hopes for Brew Horse.

"He has had a few preps, but this is definitely the best he's been and now that he has won his maiden, we will most likely give him a break and hopefully he can come back and win us a few more races.

"I would like to think the best is yet to come so we will make sure we take our time with him and give him every chance to realise his full potential."
