Campbell back to strike with Wolf

Barry Campbell returns to the state’s training ranks with his first runner in Devonport on Sunday.

Barry Campbell, who had his license renewed last week following a two-year ban, will saddle up highly promising two-year-old Alpine Wolf on Sunday.

Alpine Wolf was boom sire Alpine Eagle's first winner and was in the care of Mark Ganderton who managed the gelding's progress leading up to his debut outing two weeks ago.

Alpine Wolf (Alpine Eagle-Copper Dancer) has been nominated for the 2YO handicap over 1009m and the race that boasts standard prizemoney of $21,000, also has a $20,000 Tasbred Bonus attached to it.

Alpine Wolf's maiden win was also a Tasbred bonus race so if the gelding emerges triumphant again, he will take his career stakes earnings to almost $60,000.

Brunton chasing milestone

Meanwhile Scott Brunton is hoping to better his training record this season and to accomplish the feat he needs another seven winners.

Brunton's best season was in 2016-17 when he prepared 96 winners but with two of the last three meetings of the season being held in Devonport his chances of preparing 97 or more winners are greatly reduced.

The reigning premier trainer doesn't frequent the synthetic track anywhere near as much as he does the turf tracks and that has been more evident in recent months.

He had 24 runners in Hobart last Sunday and claimed five winners, the same as he did at the previous Hobart meeting, while his stable has only three nominated for the Devonport meeting on Sunday.

He will most likely be banking on a big day at the season's finale in Hobart on 25 July.

Brunton regularly takes his horses to Victoria during the winter months, and he will have four saddled up this week.

Videmanette tackles a benchmark 64 at Sandown on Wednesday and his stable newcomer, Shammgod, formerly from the Mick Price sable, is nominated for a 1100-metre maiden at Kyneton on Friday.

He has Reite Den Blitz nominated for a 3YO fillies' event at Caufield on Saturday and Shot of Irish is nominated for a BM84 at the same meeting.
