After narrowly missing out in the first Midway Handicap, Wyong trainer Damien Lane was thrilled to capture the second with on-pace filly Zorocat

The Lane-trained Just Field was denied by Our Bellagio Miss in the inaugural running of the race last weekend, but Zorocat made her own luck on the speed to go one better at Randwick on Saturday.

"It's a great incentive these Midway races for stables like ours. We were a bit unlucky in the first one last week and made up for it today," Lane said.

"She is a filly who has always had plenty of ability but gets a little bit hot. She's going in the right direction."

The Randwick track was rated a heavy 8 before the first race but as rain started to teem down halfway through the 10-race card, the surface was downgraded to a heavy 9.

Zorocat ($8.50) had never been tested on conditions worse than soft but she had no trouble handling the testing ground, skipping clear to score by 3-1/4 lengths over Ashim ($6) with Bazooka ($4.20 favourite) a further 2-1/2 lengths away.

"She looked like she got through it really good. She had good soft track form, there's always a little query going into it but it helps when you've got speed and you're out of the kick-back," Lane said.

"She's got plenty of ability and I think she'll keep going through the grades."
