Well bred mare chasing Saturday spoils

Trainer Gerald Ryan is hoping Hyannis Port can add a valuable Saturday city placing to her resume.

Hyannis Port might not have the ability of her Oakleigh Plate-winning dam Mrs Onassis but like her mum, she is proving to be a late bloomer.

Gerald Ryan prepared Mrs Onassis to win the Group One sprint in 2013 and said just as that mare continued to improve with age, so has her daughter.

"Mrs Onassis wasn't at her best until four or five because she didn't race until she was three," Ryan said.

"This filly, she hasn't got the best pins on her and you've got to manage her, but she has come back really well this time.

"Her trial the other day was good and Jay (Ford), who has ridden her quite a bit, he rode her in a jump out ten days prior to her trial and said she felt enormous, then the other day he came back and said I reckon this is her best trial ever."

Hyannis Port will resume in the City Tattersall's Club Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday and while she hasn't won first-up, she has performed well fresh in the past.

Ford has stuck with her and Ryan is keen to see the beautifully bred daughter of Redoute's Choice prove herself in Saturday metropolitan grade.

"You don't get a long prep with her and she will probably go to stud this year, so I thought while she is up and she's good and sound, if we get a 'firmish' track then she gets her chance to run really well on a Saturday," Ryan said.

Stablemate Arousal will also contest the race after being scratched from Sunday's Gosford meeting where she drew a wide gate.
