Polley’s breed dominate Hobart meeting

3 minute read

Owner-breeder Rick Polley had a day out in Hobart on Sunday by snaring a double with Nev’s Boy and Don’tbuckme Off.

In Brief

  • Polley snares unique quinella.
  • Nev's Boy gives Jordan apprentice's title.
  • Luttrell hoping for big things from Don'tbuckme Off.

But he also celebrated a breeding quinella with Nev’s Boy’s older sister Seguimientos running second in the class one over 1400m.

Nev's Boy, prepared by John Luttrell, and Seguimientos from the Scott Brunton stable, finished first and second respectively, much to the delight of apprentice Codi Jordan who needed Nev's Boy to win to secure the 2020/21 Tasmanian apprentice's premiership.

The pair were bred by Polley who also races them in partnership with his wife Tina.

"That's a fair effort to have brother and sister run the quinella," Polley exclaimed after the race.

Nev's Boy (Wordsmith-Primrose Bay) is a three-year-old and the younger of the two by a year and Luttrell is confident the gelding has a bright future.

"Nev's Boy is a nice horse that took time to come to hand, but he is racing really well, and I reckon he'll win his way through the classes," Luttrell said.

Seguimientos was game in defeat and has been a good money spinner for Polley this preparation.

The four-year-old mare loomed to run past Nev's Boy, but her brother packed too many guns and went down by a half-length.

Polley had a brilliant day out as his four-year-old Don'tbuckme Off scored a narrow, but game win in a benchmark 66 handicap over 1200m to give Luttrell and Jordan a race-to-race double.

Don'Tbuckme Off had mixed form going into the race and he also carried a reputation for stopping once he hit the front.

But Jordan opted to hunt him out of the gates, and he had no trouble leading.

He travelled well to the home turn and Jordan waited until well into the home straight before asking the gelding for the big effort and he held on to win narrowly.

Luttrell said Don'tbuckme Off had enough ability for him to contemplate aiming him at a feature sprint race next season.

"Don'tbuckme Off has always shown above average ability but he can be his own worst enemy.

"That was his fourth win, but he probably should have won another four.

"If we can cure his habit of waiting for them once he hits the front, he'll knock up winning races and I'd be inclined to aim him at a Newmarket."
