Trainer Gavin Bedggood is wanting to add some 'black type' to the record of in-form mare No Effort before the spring is out.

An in-form, off-season mare that has won her past two starts at Sandown and Caulfield, No Effort heads to The Valley on Saturday to contest the Brompton Handicap (1600m).

No Effort finished third in the corresponding race last year behind Al Galayel, an opponent on Saturday, beaten 2-¼ lengths and meets that galloper on 3kg better weight terms.

The mare also enters Saturday's race in far better form, however she has not raced in five weeks, not that is causing Bedggood any worry.

"She won two on the hop and if we want to aim for something a little higher, she hasn't got any black type yet, it's hard to race right the way through winter and still be racing during the early parts of the spring," Bedggood said.

"So, I thought we'd give her a little let-up and drop back to the mile."

Bedggood said No Effort had been working fantastic in the time since her last start and believes she is going into Saturday's race in as good order as she was in her previous wins on June 12 and 26.

The trainer is hoping for a top three finish on Saturday to enable Bedggood to set his sights on the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on August 28.

Victory in that race would provide No Effort the all-important 'black type'.

"It's normally your Cups horses kicking off in that race," Bedggood said.

"Peter Moody's mare In Good Health won it last year rolling along up on the speed and it might be her best chance of getting black type if she was to run to her best there.

"Beyond that, I'm not too sure where we'll go, but it will be a good predicament to have."
