Prominent Tasmanian racehorse owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard started the new season with a bang by winning four of the eight races in Devonport on Sunday.

The Geards celebrated the first winner of the season when Gee Gee Can Win Win gunned down the race favourite Sweetsop to score by the narrowest of margins.

Gee Gee Can Win is trained by Team Wells and they made it two for the day when Gee Gees Teardrop powered home to win the Jockey Celebration Day 0-60 Handicap over 1350m and Team Wells provided the quinella with Gee Gee Bay Watch.

It was a gun ride from Peter Lui who sent the four-year-old forward from a wide gate to eventually find the lead and on the home tun he released the rein and the four-year-old bounded clear and went on to win by a half-length.

It was then Brighton-based trainer Stuart Gandy's turn to shine.

Gandy's Gee Gee Plane powered home to win the Carlton and United Breweries Class One handicap (1150m), coming from well back to score from his stablemate Gee Gee Real Deal and Team Wells supplied the trifecta courtesy of Gee Gee Rhythm finishing third.

Gandy then produced Gee Gee Goldenlass to win the Levendi Standing at Broadmarsh Stud BM60 over 1150m.

It was Gee Gee Goldenlass' second start this campaign and provided she holds her form there are more wins in store for this talented daughter of Wordsmith.

The Devonport Racing Club released their 2020-21 season award winners on Sunday and Team Wells (Leon, Dean and Trent) took out the leading trainer award with 146 points, well clear of fellow Spreyton trainer Leanne Gaffney.

Bulent Muhcu was the leading jockey as he finished on 131 points, 14 points clear of Brendon Mccoull.

The leading apprentice title went to Codi Jordan who accrued 69 points to finish eight clear of Kyle Maskiell.

The DRC Horse of the Year was won by the Graeme Mcculloch-trained Galway Girl that racked up 17 points, one clear of the Glenn Stevenson-trained Rising Hsiang.
