Tom Dabernig, the grandson of legendary horseman Colin Hayes has spent the past 25 years at Lindsay Park and landed first winner from his new base at Warrnambool when Lunatic Fringe was success at Coleraine on Thursday.

"It was good to get a winner this week,'' Dabernig said.

"Things are going along well, we've got small numbers presently, but I am really enjoying that,'' he said.

He'll have his first South Australian runner in his own name when Bellx steps out with Todd Pannell in the saddle in a race Dabernig said looked a nice steppingstone.

Bellx was competitive in some handy three-year-old races having placed in a Tasmanian Oaks and ran second in the Galilee Final at Flemington and comes off an eye-catching run at Ballarat on the synthetic track.

Dabernig said she was building nicely and the staying races in SA were appealing as she progresses.

"She's a mare who can run a mile and half and can stay quite well,'' Dabernig said.

"She's getting to that fitness level where she can get out in distance and start winning, whether it's this week or in the coming weeks, she's building up to a win.

"She's drawn nicely on Saturday and has Todd Pannell, Will Clarken's horse (Stan The Caddy) looks hard to beat but she shouldn't too far away,'' he said.

Dabernig is currently leasing stables from fellow Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams and has plans for a 48-box complex on track and said Victoria's South West was the perfect place to create his own dynasty for his family and provided the right access to both South Australia and Victorian racing.

"I looked at moving back to Adelaide closely,'' Dabernig said.

"But with a lot of my clients and relationships now Melbourne-based there was more of a push to stay here, I like the country atmosphere and Warrnambool was the right option.

"It's quite a good run from here to Adelaide and we also have the tracks in the South-East we can look at with horses needing to win races,'' he said.
