Trainer David Brideoake is happy to go to the well once again with Red Can Man as he chases a Group 1 victory with the former Perth galloper.

Red Can Man will be lining up for his sixth start for Brideoake when he runs in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) on Saturday, the official opening of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

After 18 starts in Perth that netted seven wins for Steve Wolfe, Red Can Man has had mixed fortunes since joining the Brideoake stable.

He was successful second-up in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in July before a midfield finish in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).

Red Can Man has since finished third in two runs over 1400m, beaten by Groundswell at Flemington on August 7 then behind Sierra Sue in the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 14.

Brideoake was happy enough with barrier eight for Red Can Man on Saturday in the 12-horse field having drawn the widest gate last time out.

"When you finish that close in the Lawrence, you are entitled to give it a spin," Brideoake said.

"I thought he was good, without being good enough to win, but he didn't finish too far from the action.

"I would have preferred to have drawn a bit lower, but as it is I'm content to run him.

"We've drawn the inside of Behemoth and Streets Of Avalon, which is outside him, you would expect to go forward and possibly lead.

"There is a chance if we can hold our position, we might find the fence and get an economical run, but that depends on whether Ben Melham kicks up on Beau Rossa.

"Obviously, we'll have to see how it plays out, but I would expect a fairly decent rush early.

Brideoake said Red Can Man had a strong gallop at Mornington on Tuesday to wind up his preparation for Saturday's race.

"He won't be lacking in fitness," Brideoake said.
