Rhapsody Rose on trial for Sydney trip

3 minute read

Promising filly Rhapsody Rose is set to make her return to racing for the first time as a three-year-old with a possible Sydney trip in mind when she starts at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Rhapsody Rose proved she was a well above average two-year-old last season, claiming the Listed Carter Stakes race during the TAB Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

The daughter of Star Witness will make her spring return in the Tattersall's Members QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1000 metres with jockey Ryan Maloney in the saddle.

Rhapsody Rose will be having her first start since finishing sixth to the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Tiger Of Malay in the Group 2 Sires' Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm in May.

"She only had three-and-a-half weeks off after the winter and a lot will depend on how she goes in this as to whether I send her to Sydney for the spring," Chris Munce said.

"She's a very good filly but she's drawn poorly (barrier nine) and the 1000-metre start can be deadly from wide draws.

"She's obviously the class runner in the race but she's not fully wound up and has a few things against her."

Rhapsody Rose was a $120,000 buy at the Magic Millions sales and has already proven a fantastic purchase for Munce, with prizemoney of more than $172,000.

Rhapsody Rose made her debut in the Listed Calaway Gal at Eagle Farm in December when she finished a close third behind Rockhampton's star filly Sweet Dolly.

She was fully qualified for the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January but Munce aborted her mission after a cantankerous display before the start of the Golden Pearl Quality at the Gold Coast in January.

During the winter, Rhapsody Rose was a gusty first-up third behind Subterranean in the Group 3 Ken Russell at the Gold Coast before taking out the Bill Carter in a close finish.

The win earned her a shot at the Sires' Produce but after leading most of the way she tired late to finish sixth, less than four lengths behind Tiger Of Malay.
