Former top galloper racing to win passes away

3 minute read

One of Australia's top racehorses and winner of five Group 1 races, Racing to Win, was this morning put down aged 19yo.

The gallant grey was a much-loved performer and took out top-shelf races such as the Epsom Handicap, Doncaster Handicap, All Aged Stakes, George Main Stakes and George Ryder Stakes.

Among his 13 victories from 30 starts were also the Group 2 events - the Theo Marks Stakes (twice), Warwick Stakes, Apollo Stakes and Hobartville Stakes.

During a stellar career when prepared by John O'Shea, Racing to Win accumulated $3.7 million in prizemoney for his adoring owners Penny Stuckey and the late Trevor Stuckey.

"Sadly we had to put the old fellow to sleep this morning," said Penny Stuckey.

"He had developed an illness and was off his feed so the vet checked him over and said it was time.

"He retired to 'horse heaven' at Julia Ritchie's Oak Ridge spelling property at The Oaks.

"We'd visited him many times but unfortunately due to COVID, we couldn't get there to say goodbye. He was a lovely horse and will be missed by many."
