Gytrash's first big spring test

3 minute read

Gordon Richards is confident star South Australian sprinter Gytrash can defy his price in Saturday’s $500,000 Group 2 Shorts (1100m) in Sydney.

First-up since his luckless Queensland raid in the winter, Gytrash will again be trying to spring a Sydney surprise after he blew past star sprinter Nature Strip to win the Concorde Stakes last year.

And despite an impressive Randwick record, the Everest placegetter is marked a $12 chance with tab.com.au.

"I think there are two or three who like to run along,'' Gordon Richards said.

"Barrier one sometimes can be a disadvantage, but I think they'll break up enough that we'll be able to get a crack at them late if we're going well enough,'' he said.

Richards' confidence is buoyed knowing the horse is in as good, if not better shape than last year.

"I'm pretty sure the amount of work he's done and the trials he's had, he won't bottom out in the race,'' Richards said.

"We've got a month to get over it anyway, his performance will determine how we handle the next month heading towards The Everest,'' he said.
