2021 STOCKS STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 race run under Weights For Age conditions for four year old and up mares at Moonee Valley conducted by the Moonee Valley Racing Club.

The Stocks Stakes is run over 1600m. It was first run in 1973 and was won by Mellition.

The Stocks Stakes has always been run at Moonee Valley and run on the Grand Final week card, either pre GF or post GF.

It has always been at the mile.

From 1979 the Stocks Stakes was Listed until 1992 then up to 2004 when it became a Group 3 before achieving Group 2 status after that.

Many elite mares who've achieved G1 wins have taken it out. For example Mystic Journey went back home to Tassie after some poor WFA runs and in the month freshen up rebounded to win back in mares grade in 2020.

After winning the 2017 Sunline in the Autumn, I Am A Star won the Spring version six months on. She won the Stocks again in 2018.

Princess Jenni won the fillies equivalent race (Alexandra Stakes) in the Autumn then returned to take the Stocks Stakes in the Spring.

The Stocks Stakes was worth $300,000 in 2021.

Notable winners of the Stocks Stakes include Mystic Journey (2020), Princess Jenni (2019), I Am A Star (2017/2018), Fenway (2015), Dear Demi (2014), Atlantic Jewel (2013), King's Rose (2011), Avienus (2010), Zarita (2009), Tuesday Joy (2008), Devil Moon (2007), She's Archie (2004), Sunday Joy (2003), Hula Wonder (2000), Londolozi (1998), Arctic Scent (1996), Alcove (1994), Gatherneaux (1992) and Natural Wonder (1990).
