Flemington
Race 4: Ruby Street
One to keep an eye on from Wednesday's Flemington meeting is the Kevin Corstens-trained mare Ruby Street.
With the rail out 14m at Flemington, a significant track bias was evident in favour of on-pace runners positioned in running lanes 1-3.
Resuming after six-and-a-half months, the Street Boss mare jumped from barrier 10 down the 1100m chute taking up her usual position at the rear of the field, six or so horses off the fence. Travelling in a similar spot throughout, it was when passing the 400m that apprentice Mathew Cartwright brought his mount off heels to let down with her run down the centre of the track.
While it did take the five-year-old a few hundred meters to pick up on the inferior ground, it was in the final 100m where she put her rivals to the sword, swooping late on the outside to cross the line first. The manner in which Ruby Street was able to defy the track bias first-up suggests she's open to improvement and is more than capable of moving up through her grades. Wednesday's win was a promising return and I suspect more wins are in store for the mare this campaign.
Gosford
Race 4: Electric Girl
Another one that returned in nice order and is worth following moving forward is Electric Girl.
Having her first start out of the Hawkes camp, the five-year-old chestnut mare jumped favourite from the inside draw over 1200m.
Given a peach from jockey Hugh Bowman, the daughter of Declaration of War was able to settle in the gun run and remain there until straightening.
Upon entering the straight, Bowman brought his mount off heels to challenge the leaders in a three-wide position. The mare stuck to her task most impressively and beat off her challengers as she careered away to the line, easing down over the concluding stages for what was a soft victory in the end.
Electric Girl's return was encouraging and indicates she's open to further improvement. Considering the tracks remain on the firmer side, she will be winning again soon and warrants adding to the blackbook.
