2021 PREMIERE STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Premiere Stakes is a Group 2 race run under Weights For Age conditions for open class horses at Randwick conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Premiere Stakes is run over 1200m. It was first run in 1972 and was won by Outback.

The Premiere Stakes was run over 1300m to start with but quickly went back to 1200m in 1976.

The Premiere Stakes was Listed until 1979 then Group 3 until 1996 then a Group 2 after that.

Apart from a couple of Canterbury editions, the Premiere Stakes has been mostly at Rosehill until moved to Randwick in 2011.

It used to be run right at the start of the season but is now on Epsom day as an Everest lead up race.

Has been very much a G1 horse's race in recent years with so many having tasted success at the highest level. The 1980s saw many elite horses win too.

In Her Time won the Premiere in 2017 but didn't make the Everest field however Clearly Innocent, who ran third, was selected. Santa Ana Lane ran well in the Everest betting after winning in 2018. Libertini also got into the 2020 Everest after taking this race.

The Premiere Stakes was run for prizemoney of $500,000 in 2021.

Notable winners of the Premiere Stakes include Libertini (2020), Brutal (2019), Santa Ana Lane (2018), In Her Time (2017), Takedown (2016), Terravista (2015), Famous Seamus (2014), Red Tracer (2012), Hot Danish (2010), Paratroopers (2006), Spark Of Life (2004), Thorn Park (2003), Mr Innocent (1999/2000), Joanne (1991/1992), Sky Chase (1988), Campaign King (1987), Emancipation (1983) and Kingston Town (1981).
