2021 SUN CHARIOT STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Sun Chariot Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for fillies and mares at Newmarket conducted by the Jockey Club.

The Sun Chariot Stakes is run over the straight mile. It was first run in 1966 and was won by Lucaya.

Originally over the mile and a quarter for 3yo fillies, it became a mile race in 2000.

In 1971 it was classified as a Group 2 but the mares were allowed to race in 1974 and became a Group 1 in 2004.

It was named after the great filly who won the Triple Crown in 1942.

Sahpresa has the most wins with three from 2009 onwards.

In the last decade the fillies have won four to the mares six.

Leading trainer is Luca Cumani with six victories. Most wins as a jockey is by Lester Piggott with six.

The Sun Chariot Stakes was worth £250,000 in 2021.
