Keep an eye on: Blackbookers - 16th October 2021

3 minute read

Racing and Sports provides a horse to watch out of Saturday metropolitan racing on October 16.

Randwick: Race 4 - Roots

One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Randwick meeting is Chris Waller-trained filly Roots.

Having her second career start in the Listed Reginald Allen over 1400m, the daughter of Press Statement was sent out third pick in the battle of the Waller stable, behind race favourite Fangirl and Hoover Lucy.

Jumping on terms, jockey Glyn Schofield restrained his mount from the wide barrier (11), settling a clear last after the early going. Given a cold ride in running, the three-year-old straightened last, tucked away toward the inside.

Schofield opted to remain close to the rails, looking to get a gap between runners. Unfortunately, when improving their position through a narrow run, the pair quickly found themselves in restricted room and became unbalanced.

Once balanced, the filly was able to secure clear running at the 150m and let down emphatically in her charge to the line. Making good ground, the three-year-old ultimately fell just short, finishing 0.5L away from the winner in second.

Roots' eye-catching finish was backed up by the clock, with the filly producing the fastest last 600m (34.44) and 200m (11.70), a fraction quicker than Everest runner-up Masked Crusader's final 200m (11.84).

Roots' impressive performance at only her second start indicates that there's plenty of scope for improvement. The filly will take natural progression and benefit from this run and will prove hard to hold out at her next outing.
