Brunton loads up at Show Day meeting

3 minute read

Premier trainer Scott Brunton has a habit of targeting Hobart meetings and this Thursday’s Show Day meeting in Hobart is no exception with over 20 of his stable tenants expected to compete on the seven-race card.

In the benchmark 68 handicap (race 5) Scott Brunton  will saddle up five of the seven acceptors that include his lightly raced six-year-old Sir Da Vinci that enjoyed success interstate last campaign and meets a likely rain-affected track that should work in his favour.

Brunton said a few of his starters will need the outing but he is particularly keen on the chances of his well-performed five-year-old Brinktop Lad in the benchmark 62 handicap over 1100 metres which is the last race of the day.

"I have a decent opinion of Brinktop Lad who is resuming from a short let-up, and I am not worried about what track conditions are on the day because he will handle all types," Brunton said.

"He is a very good horse that I hope will win a real good race down the track.

"I've got four others in the race, and they are sneaky chances, but should Brinktop Lad get the right run, he is the one to beat from my lot."

The Brunton stable is represented in every race except the second, a maiden-class one over 2100m, but his life partner Tegan Keys, and with whom he shares a training complex at Seven Mile Beach, will saddle up One Lotto that was narrowly beaten last start in Launceston and is likely to start a short-priced favourite.

Apprentice Jemma Curtain makes her debut on Saturday aboard Gee Gee Plane in the Beach Hotel Burnie Benchmark 62 Handicap over 1100 metres, the same race in which Brinktop Lad is engaged.

Curtain has ridden in over 100 trials in the past year and has successfully sidestepped a weight issue that delayed her securing her license to ride in races.

Gee Gee Plane is prepared by Curtain's master Stuart Gandy and with her four-kilogram claim, the gelded son of Wordsmith should make his presence felt at the business end of proceedings.
