Preview: Launceston - Wednesday, 3rd November 2021

3 minute read

Tassie thoroughbred fans are treated to the second meeting in as many days with a nine race card in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Weather has the potential to play a big part in proceedings with heavy rain forecast around the start time for the meeting.

The rail moves to the +5m position after being in the +1m a week ago.

Open race with the likely favourite GEEGEELUCKYSTAR (4) running on Tuesday. SEGUIMIENTOS (12) got a great steer from Georgie Catania to win at the T&D last start. That form was franked when the second horse won last week. TILTHEREWARSYOU (14) was third in the same race and covered a stack of ground in her subsequent run. NEEDADOLLARBILL (5) also brings the same form. The market drift suggested he would need that run but he still hit the line solidly. OUR SHINKANSEN (10) has been a bit costly this campaign. She's had some excuses, but they are starting to wear thin. Blinkers and the tongue tie go on. GEE GEE PLANE (1) had the wrong part of the track in Hobart. GEE GEE JOSIE (3) has been consistent in a couple of runs back but certainly isn't the star she threatened to be as a juvenile. GYMPINS (11) goes well in Launceston and could be a knockout if she doesn't blow the start.

ROMARY (10) has made a good impression in her two Tasmanian runs, winning strongly last start in Hobart. That form can be franked on Tuesday, but she's shown good versatility in her two starts for John Luttrell. KAY OH ELL (7) tracked the quinella through last time and was taking some ground off them late. Both those horses have since run well. INCRIMINATE (2) didn't bring his impressive Devonport win to the grass, grinding home over 1400m. He jumps up in distance now with the blinkers applied. TINY TIMMY (3) settled much closer to the speed last time which was key to him notching his first win. HOT RELATION (1) passed on a 1400m run in Hobart for this mile assignment. LADY (8) never saw daylight at the T&D last start which came off the back of an excellent first-up run.

Brunton pair LAYLOW PLUCK (1) and LEICA STARLET (7) were scratched from Hobart on Tuesday to run here. Both horses trialled well and though I was slightly more impressed by the trial of Laylow Pluck, Leica Starlet has the better barrier draw of the two. SHAKE YOUR TOOSHY (9) is another that passed on Hobart, and she was unlucky enough to draw off the track at both venues. She trialled well but is likely to give a decent start over 1100m. BAHEERA (5) led and was swallowed up late at her Tassie debut but was beaten under a length. UPSET (3) has been trying a while to win a maiden and has gone close a few times. GEE GEES BUZZ (4) will try and kick up from the inside gate and should stick on for a while if he can hold a forward position.

MAGIC TYPHOON (10) ran well at her Tasmanian debut, working into second after taking a while to find clear air. Starting at 1220m and dropping to 1100m is a slight query but this is a thin race. BROADWAY BABE (4) gave a big start away as she tends to do first-up and was doing her best work late. Her barrier manners make her hard to trust over a sprint trip. NINTH ANGEL (8) was 459 days between runs in the same race and seemed to feel the pinch late. She will strip fitter for that hit out. LAKE BLED (6) was $2.90 out to $5.50 when she resumed and has continuously shown an inability to finish her races off. MISS SLEUTH (7) was decent at a big price in the same race as Magic Typhoon. WILD DESTINY (3) has had a stable change and is now with Rowan Hamer from John Blacker. Keep an eye out for any market lead there.

DAWN EAGLE (7) is one of four Alpine Eagle sired horses in the race. He led the field first-up but was no match for one that looks very promising. CHOSEN EAGLE (2) got out of his ground in the same race but was charging home late. The extra 100m looks a real positive for him off that. WARICA (8) was sent out $3 on debut and didn't shirk the task despite being under pressure a long way out. We should know by this race whether the inside draw is a help or hinderance. NEEDS REMEMBERING (6) was the most expensive purchase in the race at $55k. He was given some race experience by Adam Trinder last campaign but draws off the track for his resumption. KAYTEE VALIENTE (5) was given a very soft time of it late by Daniel Ganderton at his most recent trial and he retains the ride on race day.

R6 Georgetown News Xpress Open Hcp, 1400m

DEROCHE (1) returned to the winner's circle last time when Brendon McCoull was able to dictate the race from the front and had a superior turn of foot late. She jumps 300m in distance here and looks to have a little more pressure in front. One of those runners is SIR SIMON (5) who led at a strong tempo and broke the hearts of those chasing. He drops 5kg and the forecast rain would only be a bonus. Both FRAGMENT (3) and BALEARIC (2) look a better chance of defeating their stablemate at 1400m but have a bit of ground to make up. QUEEN LA DIVA (7) has been disappointing this campaign and now has the blinkers back on to try and regain some form. SUPER SWOOP (8) is unbeaten on heavy tracks and is an expected improver up in distance, particularly if the track is rain-affected by this stage of the night.

R7 Longford Newsagency Benchmark 62 Hcp, 1400m

GREGORIAN CHANT (2) was a bit plain here two starts ago but responded with a slashing third last start. She's drawn wide so keep an eye on any pattern by this stage of the night. GEE GEE MANPOWER (3) made a nice return in the same race, just missing the placings. Pattern is important for him as well with the inside marble. SKYWAY STAR (8) and HAILEYBURY MISS (5) are two tried horses making their Tassie debuts. They come through the same trial where neither was tested but the Blacker runner bombed the start. QUEEN'S NEEDS (4) covered ground in Hobart but was still strong through the line. RAGHU (1) will be looking for a firm track and hasn't really been a grass horse for Rowan Hamer but should roll forward in a race lacking obvious tempo.

R8 Kings Meadows News & Lotto Benchmark 76 Hcp, 1100m

DARK WANDERER (1) won the same grade of race at the T&D first-up and has seemingly escaped handicap penalty as he has the same weight. That race looks deeper than this but he's unproven if rain arrives. GEEGEE TRENDSETTER (4) tracked Deroche in a race where the field basically crossed the line where they settled. GEE GEE TRUE STORY (3) had the leaders back there but couldn't go with them when the sprint went on. That form is tested earlier in the night. OUR LITTLE TED (6) went to a new level through the synthetic season and finds a nice race to try and replicate that form on the grass. ASPIRATE (2) ran comfortably the fastest trial of the day in Devonport last Tuesday. He has a few tricks and will likely be looking for a bit further than the 1100m on offer here.

R9 Charles St Central Newsagency & Lotto Benchmark 68 Hcp, 1600m

ASSARANCA (2) and SO ASTOUNDING (8) controlled the speed here a fortnight ago and had a great battle up the home straight. There was only a breath between them that night and So Astounding has a 1.5kg swing in her favour. Forgive the run of TRAVELLING GIGOLO (7) in Hobart as the rider was struck in the face mid-race putting her at a disadvantage. She was backed into $3.80 favourite that day. SIR DA VINCI (1) is suited up in distance and if the track lends itself to a staying contest, then he'll be favoured. He comes through the same formline as BRANDUM BAY (3) who was awful went sent out a $5 chance. FULL KNOTS AHEAD (4) comes right back in trip which is some query even with 50 days between runs.
