Race 10: Brutality
One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Newcastle meeting is Joseph Pride -trained gelding Brutality .
After a disappointing first-up performance, the son of Shamus Award was unwanted in the market ($51) under the top weight over the 1300m journey.
The five-year-old jumped on terms with his opposition before settling in his usual race position off-midfield.
Tucked away on the rails with all but one runner ahead of him when straightening, jockey Kathy O'Hara and her mount needed a miracle effort if they were going to fight out the finish.
Electing to stick to the rails, the gelding ran on strongly from the 200m.
Taking good ground off their rivals, the pair did not go around a single runner as they dashed home for third.
Although not threatening the winner, the way Brutality - who is a notable 'mudlark', was able to go through his gears and hit the line on the Good 4 track was extremely encouraging.
If Brutality can find a softer surface at his next outing, there is little doubt he will be threatening.
The gelding is nominated to back-up in The Gong on Saturday at Kembla Grange. Currently rated a Heavy 8 and with rain forecasted for the backend of the week and over the weekend, the $51 available with tab.com.au presents great value.
