The Ballarat Cup is a Listed race run under Handicap conditions for stayers at Ballarat conducted by the Ballarat Turf Club.
The Ballarat Cup is now run over 2000m. It was first run in 1939 and was won by Plymouth Hoe.
Like many of the Victorian Provincial Cups, the race was born around the WWII period.
It has always been a handicap. The race has been run over varying distances between 2000m and 2200m but settled on the latter from 1971. Back to 2000m in 2019.
The Ballarat Cup was a Principal Race until 1979 then a Listed race.
Probably one of the best winners of the Ballarat Cup was recently when The Offer won before taking a Sydney Cup a few months later.
Kiwia won back to back Ballarat Cups in 2019 and was first to win it twice in nearly 40 years.
The Ballarat Cup was worth $500,000 in 2021.
