Racehorse ownership now a family affair for the Hayes clan

3 minute read

Course photographer Bill Hayes went as close as he possibly could to snaring a winning double as an owner in Launceston on Wednesday night when Belle Cadeau won the Vale Rosanne Roles Maiden on debut and his former smart juvenile Le Cadeau took out the benchmark 76 handicap over 1200m.

Bill Hayes is the managing owner of four-year-old Le Cadeau but when he purchased Belle Cadeau he thought his wife, Luise, and their daughters Erina Hayes and Caddie Szauber should share in the enjoyment of owning a racehorse, so he siphoned off his share in the filly to them.

Belle Cadeau caused her trainer Barry Campbell a few headaches in the early days, but all was forgiven when she won the Vale Rosanne Roles Maiden over 1200m.

The three-year-old filly finished a distant last in her first trial in early October but progressed gradually to a stage where her trainer believed she would be competitive in a race.

Belle Cadeau ($12 into $6) settled better than midfield and when rider Siggy Carr called on her to improve turning for home, she grabbed the bit and worked through the field to hit the front 200m out and then staved off all challenges to score comfortably.

The filly is owned by all females that comprises Margot Smart and her daughter Judith Gardiner and the Hayes' family.

Le Cadeau was very impressive in winning the BM76, coming from near last to score from Boom Dot Com and Our Little Ted with the winner heavily backed in to start the $3.50 favourite.

Le Cadeau was coming off a narrow win two weeks earlier and even his trainer was far from confident going into the race.

"I wasn't all that impressed with how he won at his previous start so I'm not sure how to explain why he was so heavily backed tonight," Campbell said.

"Had he won like he did tonight at his previous start I could understand why he would start favourite.

"But in saying that he was a very good juvenile, and he has just started to find form."
