Deroche finds best form to win Newmarket

3 minute read

One of Tasmania’s best sprinters from two seasons ago, Deroche, caused a boilover when she emerged triumphant in the $125,000 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m in Launceston on Wednesday night.

In Brief

  • Former smart sprinter bounces back with brilliant Newmarket win.
  • Trainer reverts to old methods to revitalise Deroche.
  • Group 3 double now the target for talented mare.

The mare's trainer Barry Campbell said he tried a few different training methods to get the mare switched on and given the way she tackled the state's most prestigious sprint, they obviously worked.

"I put her over the jumps, and I worked her this morning," Campbell said.

"She is a class mare that has a few issues these days, but we have worked out how to manage them and if she remains responsive, she has more to come for the rest of the season in the major mares' races."

Last season's leading apprentice Codi Jordan was able to urge Deroche ($26) from a near outside gate to find the lead and once in front she rated the mare superbly and the mare was strong on the line and was able to hold out I'm Wesley ($35), First Accused ($16) and The Inevitable ($6) that finished second to fourth respectively.

Campbell said Deroche would have a couple of weeks off and return to tackle the Group 3 Bow Mistress and the Vamos Stakes in February.

The well-backed War Correspondent ($5) appeared to fall out of the gates and a subsequent stewards inquiry revealed he was denied a fair start and was declared a non-starter.
