Turk Warrior ready for his biggest challenge

3 minute read

TRAINER Glenn Stevenson says his unbeaten three-year-old Turk Warrior is ready for his toughest challenge at Elwick on Friday where he will line up in the $100,000 Tasmanian Guineas over 1600m.

In Brief

  • Turk Warrior's trainer can't fault his stable star heading to the Tasmanian Guineas.
  • Campbell maintains the 1600 metres will suit his star three-year-old.
  • Medal getting ready for Tasmanian Derby.

It will be the first time the gelded son of Outreach has tackled the 1600-metre trip, but Stevenson is confident the gelding will emerge with his unbeaten record intact.

Turk Warrior won six last season that comprised a clean sweep of the feature races, including the Listed Elwick Stakes and $150,000 Gold Sovereign.

This season he is two from two, having won first-up in the 3YO Cup and followed up with an impressive win in the 3YO Trophy over 1400m.

"I couldn't be happier with my horse," Stevenson said.

"His work this week has been great and his demeanour around the stable tells me I couldn't have him in better order for this race.

"I'm confident he won't have a problem running out a strong 1600m."

Turk Warrior's archrival, Alpine Wolf, from the Barry Campbell stable, has finished second to Stevenson's gelding at his only two starts this preparation but he was taking good ground off Turk warrior at his latest outing over 1400m.

The connections of Alpine Wolf have been spruiking for ages that their Alpine Eagle gelding will excel once he gets to 1600 metres and beyond.

He finished second to Turk Warrior in their only two clashes in the 3YO Cup (1200m) and the 3YO Trophy over 1400m, so the Guineas could be D-Day for the Barry Campbell-trained gelding.

Campbell confirmed this week that his talented three-year-old will go into the Guineas "spot-on".

"I can't fault the horse and his work has been as good as he's worked this preparation, so he's ready for the 1600 metres."

Should Alpine Wolf emerge triumphant, his owners would be the recipients of an additional $50,000, which is the amount Armidale Stud offered to the first progeny of the stud's sire Alpine Eagle to win a stakes race at three.

The interesting runner is Medal from the Mitchell Beer stable at Albury (NSW).

Medal has been in the state for a while preparing for this race, but Beer says the Tasmanian Derby is his main mission and the gelding would need the Guineas outing before stepping up to 2100m in the Launceston Guineas prior to tackling the Derby (2200m).
