Double brightens trainer’s New Year

3 minute read

Brighton trainer Terry Evans has a dilemma that most trainers would want after his promising four-year-old Hellova Night won a class three handicap in Hobart on Friday.

Hellova Night ($3.60) settled just off the speed set by Flourishing Future and when rider Codi Jordan called on the gelding to extend, he quickly raced to the lead and left his rivals in his wake, with the favourite Summer Fire ($2.80) running on fairly for second, just in advance of outsider Zagame ($26).

Hellova Night's owners are keen to test the son of Night of Thunder against some of the best quality sprinters in the state in the Ladbrokes Stakes over 1200m in Launceston on Australia Day, but Terry Evans is hoping they set their sights lower, for the time being.

"I'd like to see this horse have another graded race before he takes on the better horses, but he is very good and I have no doubt he is capable of winning a race like the Ladbrokes Stakes, I'm just not quite sure he's ready now," Evans said.

"We've been patient with him, and this was probably his best win, so he is coming along nicely and there is a good race in him this preparation."

Evans celebrated a double with his underrated gelding Etosha leading throughout to win a maiden over 1100m with Devonport Cup-winning jockey Mehmet Ulucinar in the saddle.

"I've always had a lot of time for Etosha and even though he drew a bad gate again (16) he had enough speed to cross and lead and Mehmet (Ulucinar) handled him beautifully.

Etosha ($34 into $27) kicked three lengths clear at the top of the home straight and had enough in reserve to defeat I'm Krupt ($5) and Rohzhae ($8.50).
