Race 3: And We Danced
One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Rosehill meeting is the Chris Waller-trained And We Danced.
Having not been beaten far over the mile in the New Zealand Group 1 1000 Gunieas, the three-year-old was a well-supported favourite when sent out over the 1500m in her Australian debut.
Jumping on terms from a middle barrier, the daughter of Wrote was urged along early under the riding of jockey Jay Ford, before landing a spot outside the leader when settling.
Travelling in a similar spot for much of the running, the filly ambled up and took over passing the 600m and continued to cruise out in front before being asked for her full effort when approaching the 300m.
Pinching a 2L break at the 200m, backers of the favourite could be forgiven for thinking their selection had the contest sewn up.
Unfortunately for those punters, the three-year-old began to quickly shorten stride passing the 100m, leaving herself a sitting duck for the swoopers who were already charging on.
Failing to give in, the filly fought bravely over the concluding stages but was ultimately headed just shy of the finishing post.
Beaten a long neck (0.3L), And We Danced was game in defeat and will no doubt take plenty of benefit from her Australian debut.
As seen so many times before, horses seem to grow a leg under the tutelage of champion trainer Chris Waller, I suspect this filly will be no different.
Worth following.
