Neil Evans's Tips for Thursday's Moruya Race Meeting

3 minute read

Moruya is rated a Heavy 9 with the rail in the True position. Weather is overcast with the chance of showers and a maximum of 25 deg.

Race 1 (1:39pm) POWER FM BREAKFAST MAIDEN HANDICAP (1010m)

We start with the maidens on a rain-hit track that can slowly improve, with the rail remaining True from the meeting 10 days ago. Ultra-honest mare 2. Stella Siren ($3.10 favourite on TAB) is first-up for a strong yard who is always content not to publicly trial. Comes to hand quickly and well experienced at this course, having placed twice in four consecutive runs here last prep.

Dangers: Stablemate colt 4. Prince Nicconi ($3.70) resumes off a six-week break and forward trial, while 1. Lockup The Kittens ($5.50) at second start and 7. Plucky Dan ($5.50) fresh, head the rest.

How to play it: Stella Siren to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 (2:14pm) DON AND SHEILA AFFLICK MEMORIAL CLASS 1 & MDN PLATE (1650m)

A weak middle-distance affair should enable lightly-raced six-year-old mare 10. Spritely Emily ($3.10 fav) to make it two wins from her last three, and two straight at the track. Wasn't beaten far in a much deeper Class 3 Highway 12 days ago, and was drawn to do no work until reaching the turn. The one to beat!

Dangers: Got enough time for home track mare 11. Jauhera ($6) who can peak third-up, while 1. Brainzes ($6) fourth-up and 12. Rubick Island ($5) dropping 2kg to the limit weight, can fight out the minor end of the prize.

How to play it: Spritely Emily to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 (2:49pm) CAMERON'S HARDWARE CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1010m)

Very handy sprint for this grade. No reason why progressive Canberra four-year-old 7. Yesterday's Gone ($5) can't win again at only his third start. Tracked the speed and drove home best a fortnight ago in a race with more depth than this, and it's significant pre-race blinkers will be used here.

Dangers: Local filly 12. Iconic Dame ($4.60) led them a merry dance from the front on debut after being well backed from an each-way price, but may have to work a bit harder to get across in this. Metro three-year-old 1. Ilzoomya ($4 fav) also led all the way in a country maiden second-up and has enough upside to figure again, but threatens to go around under the price from a wide gate. Watch the betting on 6. Huxton Creeper ($8.50) having his first run since mid-winter for an underrated stable with blinkers removed, while including last start and upset maiden winner 9. Song Cycle ($9.50) in wider exotics.

How to play it: Yesterday's Gone to win and box exacta 1,7,12
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 (3:25pm) SOUTH COAST RETREAT AT GREENWELL POINT BM 66 HCP (1010m)

Like the value here about local mare 4. Heavenly Thunder ($9), 25 days since working home late in the stronger Town Plate behind a smart short-courser. That was her first run in five months and she can improve sharply here from a softer draw.

Dangers: Trained on the track, 6. Princess De Roca ($2.40 fav) is unbeaten from two fresh runs and draws the inside for her first run since early spring. Provincial mare 7. Linden ($5.50) is suited second-up. Worked home nicely 13 days ago in a lesser grade, but has plenty of upside and this isn't much stronger. Fellow Kembla-based runner 3. Factorize ($5.50) also rushed home fresh to beat all bar the winner in BM 58 grade, although tends to come back a peg second-up. Keep safe 5. Deepfield Magic ($8.50) who is capable of charging home late.

How to play it: Heavenly Thunder each-way and box trifecta 3,4,6,7
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 (4:05pm) THE RUC MAIDEN PLATE (1425m)

Loved the way tough three-year-old 6. Pink Panther ($5) hit the line late first-up at this track in a race that can prove a solid formline. Carries the same weight from a much softer draw and gets his big chance to breakthrough.

Dangers: Emerging three-year-old 2. Airliner ($3.20) was gallant on debut, missing narrowly in that same race behind Brave Maso. Has trialled on soft ground fairly but a query unless the rating improves rapidly. Gap to the rest headed by 1. Impulsive Tycoon ($9.50) second-up.

How to play it: Pink Panther to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 6 (4:45pm) THE NAROOMA SPORTING CLUB NAROOMA CUP BM 74 HCP (1200m)

Small field but still plenty of chances in the feature. Got plenty of time for lightly raced six-year-old 5. Blaazay ($4) who chased home a smart Class 3 winner first-up and even better suited here.

Dangers: Provincial six-year-old 3. Ilvermorny ($8) should be set to find his best form after improving sharply last start here off a six-week break, while 8. Crackalacka ($3.60 equal fav) has charged home to win two straight at the Sapphire Coast, but meeting some smarter ones here.

How to play it: Blaazay to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 (5:25pm) SHEILA AFFLICK MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1425m)

One of the more open races is saved for last. Versatile mare 1. Jac The Great ($9.50) has to carry a big weight second-up but always improves off her first-up run. Was scratched from Canberra on Wednesday to run in this.

Dangers: Tough five-year-old 7. Budderoo Blitz ($6) second-up, local mare 6. Sucrose ($10) who is deep into her prep, and 2. Big Steve ($8.50) who drops in class after being well beaten in much tougher Highway grade all go into exotics.

How to play it: Jac The Great each-way
Odds and Evens: Split
