Zoushine takes Bow Mistress in her stride

3 minute read

It was a case of mission accomplished for South Australian mare Zoushine when she delivered a career-best effort to win the Group 3 $150,000 Kevin Sharkie Bow Mistress Stakes (1200m) for fillies and mares in Hobart on Friday.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained four-year-old went into the race first-up from a spell with only a trial at Morphettville to her credit before making the trip across Bass Strait.

The stable's travelling foreman Tony Hanley said it was a long-range plan to target the race.

"The owners sat down about a year ago and targeted this race because it is a Group 3 and winning it would add value to her as a broodmare," Hanley said.

"Tony and Calvin have a good opinion of her, and she was already stakes placed but this win is enormous for the owners."

Zoushine ($7.50) was ridden by Barend Vorster who had the mare caught three-wide early but managed to find a spot and when he asked her for the big effort in the straight, she charged home and had a half-length to spare over Award Winner ($11) with Bons Abroad  ($6.50) to make it an all-interstate trifecta.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained Boom Dot Com ($21) was the first Tasmanian mare home in fourth spot ahead of the favourite Florescent Star ($3.20).

The heavily backed Miss Tuppence ($12 into $4.80) had a devilishly hard run being caught no better than three-wide the trip but she still had the audacity to loom to win in the straight and finished only 2.35 lengths from the winner in sixth place.

The favourite Florence Star ($3.40) finished fifth and appeared to have every chance.
