Danny O’Brien has his sights on a second Adelaide Cup in three years after Wyclif’s dominant win in the inaugural Listed Premier’s Plate, formerly Birthday Cup, at Morphettville on Saturday.
Last year's Port Adelaide Cup winner put his hand up for a crack at the two-mile trip with a dominant two length win over race favourite Unique Artist.
The win gave local jockey Jake Toeroek a timely feature race win after missing the ride on Kemalpasa in the recent Durbridge Stakes. Toeroek's opportunity on Wyclif came about after he couldn't make the weight required to ride race favourite Unique Artist.
Danny O'Brien won the 2020 Adelaide Cup with King Of Leogrance, while Wyclif is now unbeaten in Adelaide and likely to return for the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes at Morphettville on February 26.
The feature was the second leg of a race-to-race double for the leading Victorian horseman after Basarwa scored with Todd Pannell in the saddle a tick over 30 minutes earlier.
Young riders Angus Chung and Ben Price shared riding honours at headquarters with a double.
Chung scored aboard Samesyn for Jon O'Connor and Yuri Royale for the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable, while Price landed a win for the powerful Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable with River Twain before Daryl Dodson's Young Jimmy made it four wins in succession claiming the last race of the day.
At Balaklava on Sunday Jade Doyle recorded her first TAB winner when she partnered Hezwest to victory for Ken Sweeney while Barend Vorster capped a nice few days in the saddle with a double in combination with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable.
Vorster claimed another interstate feature in Tasmania on Friday when the McEvoy's Zoushine won the $150,000 Group 3 Bow Mistress Stakes at Hobart.
And the SA success across the Tasman continued on Sunday when the Phillip Stokes-trained More Than Exceed won the $125,000 Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes at Hobart with Ismail Toker in the saddle.
