Waugh stable chases another two final berths at Newcastle (Sat)

3 minute read

Kim Waugh has qualified Great News, one of the favourites to win the 2022 Polytrack Provincial-Midway Championships Final, and on Saturday the stable will saddle up two of the leading contenders in the Wyong Qualifier (now at Newcastle) over 1350m.

Kim Waugh's pair French Bonnet ($7.50 on TAB) and Different Strokes ($8) are both resuming from spells and they both have outstanding credentials. The grey mare French Bonnet has won four of her 10 starts including three from five on wet tracks.

She hasn't raced since November 2, however, French Bonnet has won two recent trials by more than five lengths. The mare ran her opposition off their legs in a recent Gosford trial and she did likewise in a Wyong trial three weeks earlier.

Different Strokes has had seven starts for three wins and three placings. He has had two quiet recent trials. In the spring he won two on the trot at Randwick and Wyong.

Kris Lees has won four of the Qualifiers and he has accepted with five of his team for the Newcastle event. The imported mare Grande Rumore ($5 favourite) has the best chance of the Lees's runners. She loves a wet track and she was placed in the Sky Racing Provincial Final a week before Christmas.

Wyong speedster Zorocat ($11) has speed to burn and could prove difficult to run down.

RACE 1, TWIN LAKES AIR PTY LTD MAIDEN PLATE, 1000M: Selhurst Park ($2.40 fav) has been placed in five of his six starts on wet tracks and he is a speedy gelding. He was beaten three quarters of a length first-up at Hawkesbury on February 8 and last start at Canterbury he was a close third after leading. Song Writer ($6) is on debut after a nice trial and Adelinda ($3.40) has her foot on the till.
SELECTIONS: 2 SELHURST PARK, 7 SONG WRITER, 4 ADELINDA

RACE 2, LAKES PODIATRY 2YO MAIDEN PLATE, 1200M: Pretty Shamrock ($4.40) was never on the track on debut when placed on a heavy track at Gosford on March 12. She had won two trials prior to her debut run and she has barrier one. Perpignan ($4.20 fav) raced well in strong two-year-old events earlier in the year and Nobel ($5.50) finished four lengths behind Sejardan in the Golden Gift.
SELECTIONS: 12 PRETTY SHAMROCK, 10 PERPIGNAN, 4 NOBEL

RACE 3, PANASALES PTY LTD MAIDEN PLATE, 1600M: Tiempe Passate ($3.80 fav) has been placed in three of her four starts and has drawn barrier one. She hasn't been far away in all three of those starts and she has been placed on wet tracks. The filly normally goes back but from the favourable barrier she may race closer. We've Got Tonight ($4.40) was held up last starts and Afewchoicewords ($7) hasn't been far away.
SELECTIONS: 12 TIEMPE PASSATE, 14 WE'VE GOT TONIGHT, 6 AFEWCHOICEWORDS

RACE 4, VIETNAM VETERANS KEITH PAYNE VC CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE, 2100M: Monfelicity ($3.80) is in career best form and from a favourable barrier may lead. She led all the way to win on the Beaumont Track on January 31 before a close second on the Newcastle course proper on February 12. Last start the filly was beaten a head over 2300m on the Newcastle track. Galifianakis ($5.50) has been narrowly beaten in his two starts at Newcastle in February. Sea Treasures ($2.90 fav) stormed home when placed at Goulburn last start.
SELECTIONS: 11 MONFELICITY, 9 GALIFIANAKIS, 5 SEA TREASURE

RACE 5, KAREN ANSEN CONSULTING MAIDEN, 1350M: Mojo Classic ($3.20 fav) is first-up after a nice quiet trial behind Imaging at Warwick Farm. He was beaten a nose on debut at Newcastle in October before a close fifth when an odds-on favourite at Canterbury in November. The Canterbury run was on a heavy track. Stablemate Norman ($4.20) has been trialling well and By Nine ($5) was runner-up at Hawkesbury on debut.
SELECTIONS: 1 MOJO CLASSIC 2, NORMAN, 3 BY NINE

RACE 6, MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES AIR CONDITIONERS AUSTRALIA CLASS 1, 1350M: Jimmy's Dream ($3.20 fav) deserves victory after a win and nine placing from 10 starts. His only win was on a heavy track and his first-up run on a heavy track at Gosford recently was encouraging. The blinkers go on for the first time. Ghostwriter ($4.40) was only beaten 2½ lengths in the 2020 Golden Gift and is first-up. Kopangi ($9.50) has a place chance.
SELECTIONS: 3 JIMMY'S DREAM, 1 GHOSTWRITER, 4 KOPANGI

RACE 7, HALEKULANI BOWLING CLUB BM68, 1100M: Pleading ($3.90) is a talented mare resuming from a long spell. She has won four of her five starts and has won three from four on wet tracks. The mare has had two recent trials and has a 2kg allowance. Stormborn ($3.80 fav) is racing well with a recent Warwick Farm win and Land Of Valens ($9.50) has a chance.
SELECTIONS: 3 PLEADING, 4 STORMBORN, 1 LAND OF VALENS

RACE 8, POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL-MIDWAY QUALIFIER, 1350M: French Bonnet ($7.50) is a classy mare with four wins from 10 starts. She has won two recent trials by more than five lengths and can race on the speed if desired. Grande Rumore ($5 fav) had outstanding Newcastle form before a spell and she loves a wet track. Zorocat ($11) is very quick and could be difficult to run down.
SELECTIONS: 6 FRENCH BONNET, 11 GRANDE RUMORE, 13 ZOROCAT
