The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable hope a trip to Caulfield during the week will pay a dividend for Cannonball on Saturday.

Cannonball will be out to remain unbeaten this campaign when he lines-up in the Listed Redoute's Choice Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield

The son of Capitalist showed promise in two runs during the spring before returning last month to score his maiden win and kick off his campaign on the right note by scoring at Geelong.

Brad Taylor, racing manager for the father-and-son training duo, said Saturday's Listed race was an early target for the two-year-old.

"He's come through his maiden win in really good order, and this was an early target in the preparation for him," Taylor said.

"He went to Caulfield on Tuesday with Brett Prebble on and had a nice gallop there and we hope to ride him with a bit of cover on Saturday and you'll see a much better horse.

"I know he's been in front before, but he did get a little lost and we do believe he is a better chaser.

"Early on in his preparation he was a little bit keen and did a few things wrong, but he's a lot more tractable this time and I think you'll see another good performance from him on Saturday."

Taylor said Cannonball could head north to Brisbane for some of the better two-year-old races during the Winter Carnival if he was to perform well on Saturday.

He said options may include Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 14, the Group 2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 28 and the Group 1 J J Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

"He's part-owned by James Harron and with these colts, these black type races are very important," Taylor said.

"We'll get through Saturday first and then we can make a plan for the rest of the prep."
