Weight a key factor as Daisies takes on the boys

3 minute read

A two-kilogram weight difference was the deciding factor in exciting Victorian filly Daisies taking on the boys in the $107,250 Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained filly could have lined up against the girls in the Auraria but the stable is keen to keep her in winning form and down in the weights.

"Getting into the Guineas a lot better at the weights was the reason we went that way,'' Kent Jnr said.

"We're keen to see her win again and being a dual Group 3 winner, the conditions of the Guineas suits her a little better,'' he said.

Kent Jnr said they made the decision to target Adelaide immediately after running fifth behind Willowy in the Group 1 VRC Oaks at Flemington in the spring.

"J Mac (James McDonald) got off her after the Oaks and said the 2500m was just a little bit beyond her,'' Kent Jnr said.

"We immediately put a circle around that race (Australasian Oaks) being a 2000m Group 1 for three-year-old fillies,'' he said.

Kent Jnr said Daisies was a horse with a lot of upside given the fact she suffered a setback early in her campaign and winning the Group 3 Alexandrina Stakes at Moonee Valley at her second run back was a bonus.

"We had a setback before her first trial,'' Kent Jnr said.

"She tossed her jockey, struck a fence, cut her neck, she ended up with some staples and missed a trial.

"We only missed a couple of weeks with her but winning second-up was a bonus and she still has a lot of improvement there,'' he said.

Daisies biggest opposition is expected to come from Harleymoven who comes off a brilliant win over the 1550m for Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray. The gelding has drawn perfectly in barrier two.
