Blacker’s filly glowing with confidence

3 minute read

Trainer John Blacker has always had a decent opinion of his two-year-old Unique Glow and last start she lived up to his expectation by scoring an emphatic win to break her maiden status in Hobart.

In Brief

  • Unique Glow has come on since her maiden win in Hobart.
  • Sally Sunshine ready to win after two encouraging efforts.
  • All eyes on Turk Warrior in 3YO feature.

The Alpine Eagle filly was having only her third start when she scored an effortless win over 1200 metres, scoring by 1-1/2 lengths from Share the Gold.

She was well backed to start the $2.45 favourite and Blacker says the filly has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since that outing and he is keen on her chances to make it back-to-back wins in the $50,000 2YO Tasbred feature over 1220m in Launceston on Friday.

"The filly has really come on since her Hobart win and I couldn't be more pleased," Blacker said.

"She looks magnificent in the coat for this time of the year and her work on Friday and again on Tuesday was good, so she is a live chance of getting the best result again.

"To travel to Hobart for the first time and to lead in a race for the first time made it all new for her but she handled it well.

"She got lost a bit in the home straight, but Siggy (Carr) held her together, so this will be her third ride on the filly and that's a big plus."

Blacker also is keen on the chances of his former Victorian Sally Sunshine in the opening race on the 10-event card, a maiden over 1420 metres.

"Sally Sunshine has run well at both of her starts for the stable since coming from Victoria and I reckon she only needs an ounce of luck in a very winnable race."

Blacker also rates French Heiress (race 8) Hamogany (race 9) and Costero (race 10) strong each-way chances in their respective events.

Tasbred 3YO

The $50,000 3YO Tasbred feature should attract plenty of attention with Turk Warrior out to redeem himself from his shock loss in Launceston last start.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained gelding was sent out the $1.12 favourite in the $75,000 3YO Classic (1200m) but was run down over the concluding stages to finish third in a photo-finish.

Stevenson sent him to the trials at Longford last week that he won narrowly, after which he was marched across the road to be scoped at the Longford Veterinary Clinic that revealed a mild infection which was subsequently treated.

Turk Warrior comes up against the talented Entrapped, highly promising filly Vetlanda and the in-form Gee Gee Snowflake that rattled home last start to finish second to Copper Charm in a tight photo-finish.
