Back-up no concern for Regardsmaree

After winning at Caulfield a week ago, Regardsmaree has repeated the dose, this time at Sandown.

Flemington trainer Nick Ryan will consider a Group 1 contest in Adelaide for Regardsmaree after the So You Think gelding scored a dogged win at Sandown

Regardsmaree was on the quick back-up in Saturday's Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) after scoring in the VOBIS Gold Sprint at Caulfield last week.

Sent out the $2.60 favourite under Billy Egan and relishing the heavy conditions, Regardsmaree defeated Buffalo River ($2.90) by a half-length with Excelida ($8) a short-neck away third.

Ryan said the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 21 was under consideration for the sprinter-miler.

"We love him on the back-up and obviously we wouldn't have run him today if we didn't think he was well," Ryan said.

"But he was hard-fit, and we might have an exciting three weeks coming up. We might keep him fresh and go to Adelaide for The Goodwood."

Ryan said he had formulated a plan for Saturday's victory with Egan which was carried out perfectly.

"We had a plan and he executed it 150 percent," Ryan said.

"We were a little bit worried about letting Buffalo River get out of his sights, so I said, 'go forward, aim for the one-one and work it out from there'.

"It was lucky he did because we probably wouldn't have run him down."

Egan said a forward showing in The Goodwood would not be out of the reach of Regardsmaree, especially off a lightweight.

"The last two weeks for me he's begun very well and that just makes my job so much easier," Egan said.

"I think a Goodwood would be within his reach, on a light weight.

"I have noticed the last two times I've ridden him he has appreciated coming off a good speed, and there'll be good speed in a race like that and he'll be the one chiming in."
