Eagle Farm has this week got three G1s on a massive ten race card.

G1 Queensland Derby (2400m 3yo SW)

  • First Running: 1868 (won by Hermit).
  • Notable Winners: Fitz Grafton (1903), Lough Neagh (1931), Spear Chief (1937), Tulloch (1957), Persian Lyric (1960), Royal Sovereign (1964), Kingston Town (1980), Strawberry Road (1983), Handy Proverb (1986), Rough Habit (1990), Freemason (2000), County Tyrone (2002), Hawkspur (2013).
  • Run at Doomben 2015/17/18.
  • Fillies: Last 50 years (9) Previous filly winner - Dariana (2010).
  • Derby held twice in 1870 and won by Grafton in both editions.
  • Was not run in 1972 as the race moved from Spring to Winter for the 1973 running.
  • Cassidy brothers have 7 wins between them.
  • Rough Habit's love affair with Queensland began in the 1990 Queensland Derby.
  • Three recent Derby winners have gone on to race with some distinction in Hong Kong.
  • Dariana failed to jump in the 2010 Queensland Oaks but ran again a week later and bolted away with the Derby.
  • Rough Habit Plate/Queensland Derby double – Dark Dream (2018), Hawkspur (2013), Brambles (2012), Empires Choice (2007), De Gaulle Lane (2001), Dodge (1998), Tenor (1994).
  • Some recent Melbourne Cup winners have come through the Queensland Derby but not won it. Vow And Declare was second to Mr Quickie in 2019. Shocking was second to Court Ruler in 2009.
  • Explosive Jack was trying to win a fourth Derby but could only run third in 2021.
  • Kris Lees has Velvet Lady hoping for a run. He has trained fillies the likes of Aliferous & Vitesse Dane to place. His father Max won the race with County Tyrone – a horse Kris would go on to train to multiple G1 successes following Max's passing.
  • Kiwis based trainer not won this for over a decade but have significant hopes via Tutukaka, Dark Destroyer and Pinarello.
