Pinarello wins Group 1 Moet & Chandon Queensland Derby: Post Race Trainer and Jockey Quotes

3 minute read

Trainer and jockey quotes after the Group 1 Moet & Chandon Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on Saturday taken out by Pinarello.

Race Result:

1st: Pinarello (L Innes/R James & R Wellwood) - $6.50
2nd: Paternal (H Bowman/C Waller) - $5
3rd: Caboche (J McDonald/C Waller) - $10

Winning Time: 2:29.53 Last 600m: NA

Margins: L x L

Winning Trainer: Roger James & Robert Wellwood (Roger James interviewed)

On Leith Innes' ride: "It was an inspired ride. I felt we could win it with the right ride and we got the right ride."

On having an enforced let up into the Derby being a negative: "Not at all, I thought it was of benefit to be honest. On Rough Habit morning, I thought we were going to run on an inevitably bad track. He has been a weak, frail horse this whole preparation. He'd been seven weeks prior to his last win and that was quite spectacular that day. I thought 'we can find a better way to the Derby'."

Was Australia always the plan: "I can't claim to that. He was actually going to go home and spell. Fortunately it was Karaka sales week and we couldn't get a float. After a week at home I thought, 'holy hell this horse has come through it well' and I decided to keep him in and here is the result. "

"I've run second and third in this derby previously. I've been placed in Sydney Derby's as well, I've won five in New Zealand. To win one in Australia is pretty special."

Winning Jockey: Leith Innes

Beaten Jockeys

James Orman (Tutukaka): "I got a lovely run from a bit of an awkward gate but he didn't have a lot of dash. Maybe he's come to the end of it."

Sam Weatherley (Dark Destroyer): "He's run super, I'm so proud of the horse. He's come a long way in one preparation. He's run really well, we just got a bit of a shuffle up coming towards the corner but he hit the line really well."

James McDonald (Caboche): "He went super. He's run out of his skin. I had a really good run in transit until the 600 where he he really tightened up – I think a runner in front of me got checked – and just come back in his lap a little bit. He finished off really well, he's going to be a horse for the future. He'll develop like nothing else and I think he's a really nice horse."

Nash Rawiller (Menazzi): "Just didn't relax."

Kyle Wilson-Taylor (Red Wave): "He's probably not up to them but he was honest. He's still an immature baby and he'll be better next prep."

Larry Cassidy (Southern Stock): "I think he went really well. The pace was reasonable, I started to make a run on him from the 800, hit the lead just after straightening but he's very one-paced. He just got found out the last little bit but I think he's run a great race. This time next year he's going to win a nice staying race because he can stay."

Brad Stewart (Balmaurice): unavailable

Rachel King (Sea Treasures): "I think he's just come to the end of the preparation."

Andrew Mallyon (Ting Tong): "He was really brave. The barrier probably cost me running a drum. On the corner I thought he was going to finish first three but those leaders probably just had a bit of a break down the back and that was the difference between finishing where I was and where I could have been."

Jim Byrne (Satirical Glory): "I got a pretty good run in the race, he just never showed a turn of foot. I was going to start moving at the 1000 but you don't want to spend your pennies until you really have to but unfortunately he never let down."

Hugh Bowman (Paternal): "He ran a brilliant race. He was there presented to win but all credit to the winner, he was just too strong for us."

Josh Parr (Dark Rebel): "He didn't run the trip and didn't like the firm ground."

Kerrin McEvoy (Global Ausbred): "He gave me a nice ride, he got into his preferred spot and he ran a creditable race. He's going to be better as a four-year-old, this will just season him up. He's a nice staying horse for the future."

Ben Thompson (Impel Gazelle): "Honest run. He just found a few sharper than him today."

Ryan Maloney (Anythink Goes): unavailable

Samantha Collett (Nest Egg): "I got on the back of Dark Destroyer most of the race and he's travelled well to the 600 but when the pressure went on he wasn't able to respond."

Brenton Avdulla (Villaden): "He ran well. We travelled lovely throughout, presented on the corner but he just didn't run the trip."
