Cloudy Nights (Outreach-Half the Sky) was backed in from as much as $101 to start at $26 and courtesy of a brilliant ride from Siggy Carr the two-year-old landed the prize in the last stride over race favourite Emphatic Bel ($2.60) in the Ladbrokes Mates Mode 2YO Maiden (1150m).

The John Blacker-trained filly went into the race having had only two starts, the more recent being a fifth in Devonport four weeks earlier in which she finished fifth of 13 over 1150 metres and clocked the fastest last 200m of the day.

"This filly has always shown me a bit and her last start was a lot better than it looked on paper," Blacker said.

"I thought she could win this race and I was really surprised they (corporate betting agencies) offered such big odds.

"All the owners had a bet, and I had a few dollars on, so we are all happy."

Blacker said Cloudy Nights would be sent for a spell.

"She's done her job this prep, so we'll put her away and bring her back for some feature three-year-old fillies' races next season."

While punters who backed Cloudy Nights were celebrating for most of the day, those who invested on Rock the Bowler, the heavily backed $1.85 favourite in the Birdcage Tavern Benchmark 76 handicap over 1650m were turning their tickets into confetti before the home turn.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained gelding settled last in a small field of five and looked to be travelling well, but 700m from home the gelding started to lose ground and rider Anthony Darmanin had to pull him up without completing the trip.

A vet's examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.

The race was won by second favourite Freelancer ($4.40) from Vallabar ($8) and Rising Hsiang ($21).
