By the Numbers – Devonport, 3rd July 2022

The Star

Barry Campbell

Who else could it be? Lieutenant Lewis, Fife and Drum, Zeva Royale and Julius gave the Hall of Fame trainer a haul of four winners at the meeting. Across the last two Devonport programs, Barry Campbell has taken a total of nine horses to the races and left with a staggering seven winners! For the season, Campbell is striking at 16/46 in Devonport (34.8%) up from his overall season strike rate of 28.5%.

Sectional standout

Ring of Honour – R7 Class 3 (1150m)

At start three for his new trainer Rowan Hamer, 5YO gelding Ring Of Honour delivered an impressive performance in the first leg of the quaddie, coming from near last for a decisive win. His last 600m Stridemaster sectionals were the fastest recorded of the day, along with the second fastest last 400m and 200m. He looks a horse that Rowan and connections can have a bit of fun with at distances up to a mile. Special mention to the punter that booted Ring of Honour home with an impressive celebration charging down to the Devonport hill!

What went wrong?

Leanne Gaffney & Siggy Carr

Siggy Carr entered Sunday's meeting as the odds-on favourite for the Jockey Challenge and trainer Leanne Gaffney was a big reason why. The pair teamed up with Barbie's Acheeva ($2.90), Alpine Aviator ($3.40), Mon Cheval ($1.75) and Vokes ($1.90) but left empty handed. With the exception of Vokes who jumped a little slow and settled behind the leader, the other three landed in favourable spots on the speed but didn't give a lot in the home straight. It may be worth forgiving the performances, particularly given most of them were firm in the market, and generally speaking Gaffney's horses race very well at home as over 40% of her career winners have come in Devonport at a strike rate of 18%.
