The two-time Melbourne Cup winning horseman said the John Letts Medal looked a race in two between leading rider Kayla Crowther and Barend Vorster after the pair dominated SA riding ranks in season 2021-22.

"It was a great season,'' Letts said.

"Barend and Kayla both rode extremely well.

"Kayla riding another 100 winners was a great effort and I think Barend's year was excellent, he's such an asset to the South Australian riding ranks,'' Letts said.

Injuries and suspensions to top riders Todd Pannell and Jason Holder halted their respective seasons while apprentice Ben Price had a breakout year to finish third on the South Australian Jockey Premiership.

"Todd rode extremely well even after he returned from injury,'' Letts said.

"And Ben Price had a brilliant year.

"Simon and Belinda (parents) must be so proud of what both he and Will (brother) have achieved already in their careers,'' he said.

Letts said SA racing had plenty to celebrate.

"The horse of the year finalists are all very good horses, we know how good Behemoth is and to win another Group 1 last season was a great effort,'' Letts said.

"And for Richard and Chantelle Jolly to have two finalists – See You In Heaven and Regalo Di Gaetano - just shows what a year they had.

"Their results were outstanding, and they've started the new season just as impressively,'' he said.
