Ahzeezah poised to break maiden status

3 minute read

Former Victorian mare Ahzeezah has been placed at her past two starts for Longford trainer John Blacker, but her maiden status could be about to change when she takes on a modest field in The Mercury Maiden over 1450 metres in Hobart on Saturday.

Ahzeezah (Shooting to Win-Choisance) began her career with Peter Maher at Wodonga on the Victoria-NSW border for whom she had 14 starts for two minor placings over distances from 1400-1600m in November-December last year.

She was transferred to Cranbourne trainer Simone Ferchie, but after only two starts for her the mare was moved on to Blacker.

Her past two starts have shown vast improvement and she should only need to take her most recent form into Saturday's race to be a maiden no longer.

The mare has drawn a near outside gate (12) but with little early speed in the race, rider Ismail Toker should be able to find a spot midfield and one-off with cover and should that eventuate, she should be winning.

The Siggy Carr-trained and ridden Berruti put the writing on the wall last start with a game second to Needs Toasting in a 0-62 over 1400m in Launceston last Wednesday week at his second run this time in and would only need to replicate that effort to be hard to beat in the PFD Food Services BM60 over 1450m.

Carr also saddles up Bandinelli in the VXT BM68 over 1100m in which the gelding faces an easier assignment than his most recent outing in Devonport.

Bandinelli has had his share off niggling issues this past year, but Carr says he has shrugged off the issues and should be extremely competitive at what will be his third start this time in.

Roches Beach trainer Julie Richards has Jaja Chaboogie, and Popeye the Sailor engaged in the race with the former the best suited.

Jaja Chaboogie contested the Group 3 Vamos Stakes (WFA mares) over 1400m for a fourth to Take the Sit and she won a BM76 event in Launceston over 1200m at her second start for Richards.
