Bush Galloper Soldiers into Goulburn for the cup (Sunday)

3 minute read

“He just wants to be a racehorse” was Bathurst-based trainer Gayna Williams’s summation of From the Bush with the six-year-old heading south for next Sunday’s $200,000 Goulburn Soldiers Club Goulburn Cup (1600m).

From The Bush is an ultra-consistent performer and from 22 starts has recorded seven wins and eight placings for $221,000 in prizemoney.

"He's as honest as they come," Gayna Williams said. "He is incredible, he just wants to be a racehorse – puts in every time he goes around."

From the Bush resumed from a four-month break with a slashing third to Zoushack at Warwick Farm (1400m) and was unlucky after encountering interference over the final 150m of the event.

Williams will take the gelding 2½ hours to Goulburn for the Racing NSW Country Showcase program boasting $470,000 in prizemoney.

The main supporting race is the $50,000 The Guy Walter (1300m) honouring the much-loved late trainer who had a base at the course.

Williams is also considering taking Own the Night to Goulburn with the gelding entered for the $40,000 Country Maiden Showcase Plate (1200m).

"He's a nice little horse who was originally with the Maher & Eustace stable," Williams said. "He's consistent and is close to breaking through."

Goulburn Race Club's CEO, Robyn Fife said the club is expecting a decent crowd with some first-class gallopers heading down.

"It's an opportunity for Goulburn to showcase some high-quality racing," she said.

"We have plenty of hospitality and catering packages available to suit any racegoer including pre-orders or food truck fare on the day.

"We'll also have live music thanks to our Sundays Sounds Live on the Lawn event as well as Beks Bloomz Fashions on The Field."

Meanwhile, Thursday is Bermagui Country Club Bermagui Cup Raceday at Sapphire Coast with a seven-race card.

"We're hoping to entice racegoers to the Sapphire Coast for a weekend at beautiful Bermi," said Jess O'Donnell, SCTC's Sponsorship & Marketing Co-ordinator.

"We'll have free buses to and from the track picking up from Eden, Pambula, Merimbula, Tura Beach, Tathra and Bega, just go to our website for details at - sapphirecoastturf.com.au

"The raceday is proudly sponsored by Bermagui Country Club, Yellowtail & Casella Family Brands, Sails Real Estate, Bega District News and ILG."

The following afternoon on Friday is Stan Sadlier Stakes Day at Wagga with the $32,000 feature supported by the $30,000 Mountaineer Cup over 2500m, reduced from 3200m.

The distance reduction is due to a Benchmark 66 Handicap (2500m), acting as a lead-up to the Mountaineer Cup, was not run when the Wagga meeting last Saturday (15th October) was postponed due to rain.

The Mountaineer Cup is also a heat of the Wagga Stayer Series.
