First strike to Liberty Rae

3 minute read

Winning the first two-year-old race of the season is something new to Cressy trainer Cameron Thompson and he was thrilled to finally add that to his training CV courtesy of his filly Liberty Rae leading throughout to win the PST Power Solutions 2YO Maiden over 900 metres in Hobart on Sunday.

In Brief

  • Cameron Thompson's filly strikes in first 2YO race of season.
  • Daughter of Shooting to Win shows brilliant early speed.
  • Hilarity shows promise with eye-catching debut.

Liberty Rae (Shooting to Win-Icebomb) showed brilliant speed from the gates to land in front and once there, rider Siggy Carr ensured an honest tempo and on the home turn the filly kicked off the bend and went on to win by 2-1/2 lengths from Hilarity with her stablemate Tenessine a half-length away third.

"I've never trained a two-year-old winner before, so this is quite exciting," Thompson said.

"You put a lot of work into them throughout the year to hopefully get them to the races and I've been fortunate to have a few that have been forward enough to make it to today's race.

"This filly has a great racing brain and that's been the case from the first day we galloped her. She just always seemed to know what she was doing and she has continued to learn and improve."

Thompson saddled up three of the seven runners but one, Ride the Moon was withdrawn at the barriers, as was one of Barry Campbell's three runners Akyria.

"I was a bit disappointed that Ride the Moon misbehaved and was withdrawn because she was the one of my three that I thought would win.

"But she had a bit of attitude at the gates so we'll just have to keep working with her and I look forward to her getting to show what she can do in a race."
