Stevo underestimates classy mare

3 minute read

The Glenn Stevenson-trained mare Reward Achiever could have her next start in the Golden Mile (1650m) in Devonport but that is unlikely to lead to a Ladbrokes Devonport Cup start if she wins.

Reward Achiever resumed from a spell with a resounding win in a benchmark 76 over her pet distance of 1400m on Wednesday night and that could be the key to her end game this preparation.

"The Golden Mile would be a nice race for her but what we have our sights on is the Group 3 weight-for-age (Vamos Stakes) over 1400m on Launceston Cup Day in February," Glenn Stevenson said.

"She has such a good record over the trip here in Launceston, but what she did tonight surprised me a bit."

Reward Achiever was to have started in Launceston on 21 October but had to be withdrawn on race night because of a mishap in the truck on the way to the track.

"The truck mishap knocked her about a bit and cost her 10 days' work, and even though we pushed the water work with her I thought she would be underdone tonight, but I underestimated her."

However, punters rallied for the mare and sent her around the $2.15 favourite.
