Campbell plays waiting game with Alpine Wolf

3 minute read

The connections of talented sprinter-miler Alpine Wolf are hoping the gelding can sneak into the Newmarket Handicap field after an impressive 800-metre trial win in Devonport on Tuesday left them in no doubt he would be very competitive in the state’s most prestigious sprint.

Alpine Wolf had surgery to remove bone chips in the knee after winning the Launceston Guineas but his two starts on resumption were disappointing.

But another spell has made the difference to the son of Alpine Eagle and Tuesday's trial result was exactly what his trainer Barry Campbell expected.

Campbell saddled up three in the trial in smart sprinter Julius, dual Devonport Cup winner Newhart and Alpine Wolf with Alpine Wolf emerging the victor from Julius and Newhart.

Newhart is expected to resume in the $150,000 Newmarket and he is assured a start because of his high rating (104), but Julius (81) and Alpine Wolf (77) could miss a start, in particular Alpine Wolf.

"I guess we will just have to cross our fingers and hope he (Alpine Wolf) can sneak in and Julius could be in the same boat," Campbell said.

"My three trialed extremely well but I was particularly pleased with Alpine Wolf.

"This is the first time I've had him where his bloods are excellent, and he is really good in the coat."

Another Newmarket aspirant And Beyond trialed over 800m and he finished second to smart mare Title Shot that led throughout.

And Beyond travelled well on the rails two-back and was held up momentarily approaching the home turn, but when clear the Tanya Hanson and Kyle Maskiell-trained gelding chased hard to finish under a length from Title Shot.

"We are happy with that effort and he'll have another strong gallop before he goes first-up in the Newmarket," said co-trainer Kyle Maskiell.

Victorian jockey Jake Noonan has been booked to ride the gelding in the Newmarket.
