Brooke Hanham will never forget four-year-old gelding Warica who gave the Longford-based apprentice her first winner in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Brooke Hanham gave Warica a gun ride to give the John Blacker-trained gelding his third win in succession with this latest victory his most impressive in a benchmark 60 handicap over 1200 metres.

"That was brilliant, but I wasn't quite sure whether we'd won," Hanham said.

"As I was trotting back (to the mounting yard) I was thinking 'please tell me I got that'."

Hanham made her way to racing through involvement in pony club and other equestrian activities.

"As a young teenager I had no real interest in becoming a jockey but pony club, show jumping, and all that sort of thing, eventually led me to the racing industry."

I must thank Graeme Mcculloch (trainer) who is a wonderful man and my partner David Keating (trainer) because without their help and guidance I wouldn't be riding today.

"John (Blacker) has given me every opportunity to succeed and of course I want to thank Warica for giving me my first winner."

Blacker said Hanham is a hard worker who deserves success.

"She works hard and rides this horse (Warica) in all his work, so it is a very good result," Blacker said.

Hanham has only held her licence to ride in races for four weeks.
