The Summoned Stakes at Caulfield will be Toregene’s first run in a ‘black type’ race.
Having secured a spring goal with Toregene, Matthew Williams is hoping to add a stakes race to the mare's record.
Lining up for her sixth race start on Saturday, Toregene contests the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield.
After winning at the Swan Hill Carnival in June, Williams picked out the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final (1600m) at Flemington on November 3 has the mare's spring goal.
Toregene duly did her part and now Williams would like to add some 'black type' to the mare's record.
"We're trying to see if we can sneak a bit of 'black type' with her," Williams said.
"She's earned her chance at that now.
"She's come through Flemington terrific, and she's trained on super at home, so I couldn't be happier with her, but she's just drawn a bit of a sticky gate.
"She'll need a bit of luck early in the race. She's not one that you can roll up into a spot, you must be very quiet out of the gates, and she can get over-racing.
"We'll have to let Dean (Yendall) suss all that out."
Williams said Toregene's racing manners were improving with every start.
Big fields invariably tend see races run at a true tempo which Williams hopes will be the case on Saturday.
"She's improving with each start, learning to relax all the time," Williams said.
"She was only second-up at Flemington after she went to Bendigo and got scratched at the barriers, so she's still got plenty of life left in the preparation.
"If she measures right up, we may have to sit down and map out an autumn preparation for her, but I think we'll have a chat about that after we see how she runs.
"She wouldn't need to go for a break, but if she runs top three and earns a bit of 'black type' then we would chase a bit more as there would be nothing immediately for her, so she could have a little break and be back for the early part of the autumn."
