In Brief

  • Jockey Anthony Darmanin rides half the card in Launceston.
  • Victorian makes impressive Tassie debut.
  • Peace Be Upon Him eyes feature race at end of carnival.

Darmanin opened the program with a last-to first effort aboard the Barry Campbell-trained Zeva Royale in a class three handicap over 1420m but he saved his best for last with a clever ride aboard the Glenn Stevenson-trained Malevolent in BM62 over 1420m.

His other winners were Victorian mare Wolf Rein from the Matthew Brown yard at Cranbourne, and he partnered the Dylan Clark-trained Peace Be Upon Him to an impressive win in a BM72 handicap over 1120 metres.

His ride on Malevolent ($4.60) was outstanding in that he allowed the seven-year-old to cruise outside of the leader Wayne's Quest and he waited until well into the straight before calling on the gelding for the supreme effort.

The Glenn Stevenson-trained seven-year-old was too strong at the business end and scored comfortably from the favourite Gee Gee Enuf Speed ($3.60) with Mariposa ($4.20) third just in advance of Renascence ($20).

Wolf Rein only arrived in the state early this week and is being stabled with Glenn Stevenson at Wesley Vale.

Stevenson was confident the four-year-old mare would run well given how well she had travelled and based on her work at the beach two days prior he suggested to the owners that they should have a bet.

It was only the mare's second win from 18 starts but she should be able to pick up another win or two before heading back to Cranbourne.

Peace Be Upon Him also proved too strong at the business end after tracking the leader before claiming the lead and kicking clear 200m from home.

The gelding's trainer said he will head the gelding towards the Royal Rambo (1100m) on Launceston Cup Day and that could be his grand final this preparation.

Watch Anthony Darmanin guide Manevolent to victory in a BM62 over 1420m in Launceston on Friday Night.
