Trinder upbeat on chances in feature races on Sunday

3 minute read

Adam Trinder takes three of his stable tenants to Hobart for the big meeting that boasts five feature events of which the $125,000 Kevin Sharkie Elwick Stakes for two-year-olds is the most prestigious on the nine-race card.

Adam Trinder saddles up Thoros Of Myr that broke his maiden stratus at his second race start in the $50,000 Alexandra Plate over 1100m in Hobart two weeks ago in which he defeated Needs Sugar by the barest of margins.

The gelded son of Frosted did plenty wrong in the run, including shying away from a horse that sidled up beside him 80 metres from home, but he still found a way to win.

Thoros of Myr won two trials before debuting with a third to Cairns in Launceston in the Alfa Bowl but Trinder believes he has come on since then and goes into this next assignment in great shape.

"He has come through his run in Hobart in good order and despite doing some things wrong he still managed to win," Trinder said.

"He's drawn a little bit sticky in eight (outside) and my initial thought was to ride him quietly, but he will probably go forward with the speed, and we will rely on his race fitness to get the result."

"I think his main danger Cairns is a long time between runs (five weeks), so my horse has recent race fitness on his side and I'm hoping that will be a deciding factor."

Cairns scored an impressive win on debut in the Alfa Bowl and while she hasn't raced for five weeks, Campbell is a genius with young horses and obviously has his reasons for such a lengthy break between runs.

Needs Sugar has been very consistent without winning and gets her chance stepping up to 1200m for the first time and first-starter Thespian Waters, that won his only trial at Longford by seven lengths could be the spoiler in the race.

Thespian Waters is prepared by Siggy Carr at Brighton and while race form is the best guide, his effort to lead and blitz his rivals in the trial must be respected, even though the time was modest.

Thousand Guineas

Trinder's three-year-old filly Jaguar Stone lines up in the Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Thousand Guineas against her own age and sex and it should be a little easier than her last outing where she raced against the boys in the Tasmanian Guineas in which her stablemate Bello Beau and race winner Russian Roni blitzed the rest.

"Three and a half weeks between runs for her to the boys Guineas was just a bit if a stretch for her but a fortnight back-up will suit her better.

"Back against the fillies she is better suited and with a wide draw she won't have to be tactical early, so she gets her chance to win and it will probably be the first time this prep that she is in a race that I expect her to win."

Lady Lynette

Trinder also saddles up Miss Tuppence in the $75,000 Cessiah Alice Millinery Lady Lynette for fillies and mares, but the trainer isn't sure what to expect.

Miss Tuppence won the Lady Lynette last year as a three-year-old but her form of late leaves a bit to be desired.

"Miss Tuppence is probably not going well enough to be honest. She hasn't won a race since the Lady Lynette last year.

"Brendon (McCoull) rode her in Launceston last start in a benchmark 78 and while her sectional times say she went well, the challenge will be the quick back-up and we will need to see improvement if she is to win."
